DON'T SET BLANK PASSWORD FOR ANYTHING!!!

It causes no end of grief in Ubuntu and also removes any security you have in your OS.

Reboot the system and hold SHIFT, select recovery mode then select root.

You can now run:

passwd foo; reboot

change foo for your actual username. E.g:

passwd andy; reboot

You can now use your password and have no issues.

Can you help with this problem?
