winbind4-- where is winbindd?

I'm attempting to install winbind4 so I cam make my Ubuntu Server 11.10 box a domain controller. But the winbind4 package does not contain winbindd, nor does it contain a login script. I'm probably doing something really stupid, but even Ubuntu's official package listing does not seem to include winbindd. Is there some other package I have to install to actually use winbind4?

Yes, I already know about those packages. My question is, where is winbindd? It's not included in the winbind4 package. If you click on the link above, then click "list of files" next to either i386 or amd64, you can see that /usr/bin/winbindd is not included. I can't believe more people haven't brought this up-- the winbind4 package doesn't actually contain winbindd. The only executables is includes is nsstest, wbinfo, and ntlm_auth.

Keeping in mind that I'm an average user like yourself......

According to the Samba team, Samba4 has its own built-in implementation of winbind. There isn't a stand-alone winbind daemon.

I believe all the windbind4 package does is provide the libnss_winbind library and a few binaries for winbind querying and maintenance.

If you build Samba4 from scratch, that lib is supposed to be included in the bundle. Why is is separated in the Ubuntu (Debian?) packages is beyond me.

Anyway, when I installed winbind4, wbinfo -p told me that the winbind service was running. Unfortunately, it caused Samba to panic however, essentially rendering it useless. I still haven't figured out what's causing this.
