setup samba with unsecured folders

Asked by Bob Reeves

I have Ubuntu Server 8.10 on one machine and Vista on another. I wish to be able to automate a backup from my vista machine to Ubuntu. No matter what I do I cannot access directories on the Ubuntu machine from vista without inputting username and password.

I have installed Samba 2 etc.

I understand the security implications, however I do not wish to input username etc every time I start the machines.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for responding, your solution did not work for me, however, this morning I had a brain wave.

On the Vista machine went into Control Panel > User Acounts > Manage your Network Passwords.

Filled in the details set it to windows network ( as the server uses Samba) and hey presto no more logins required.
