Not for me. (Unless a Collection of several thousands of mp3s have to get scanned.)
And what is "a lot"?
And what might be your systems specs?
A bit more infos might help to get your problem solved.

Sorry for question without preanswers.
My system is laptop HP Compaq nc6120, 1.87Gz (CPU scaling is Ondemand), 1G of RAM. OS Ubuntu Karmic Beta. Playlist (and media library) contains 20 items.
"A lot" is 100% (about 40% sys and 60% users) on full CPU speed.
I noticed this issue on another players: listen, banshee. Sound is playing through ALSA.

So... you should file a bugreport I think. Against Alsa or even Karmic as is.
