rhythmbox-client doesn't see rhythmbox app

Ubuntu 14.04
rhythmbox 3.0.2

Rhythmbox is running and responds to the play button in its window, but doesn't respond to rhythmbox-client requests. Just upgraded to 14.04. This was working prior to the upgrade (12.04LTS).

philbert@philbert:~$ rhythmbox-client --debug --play

Is this a bug, or is there something else I need to do to make this version work?

I suggest you report a bug.

You have upgraded before the offering of 14.04.1 and have forced the upgrade so you may get issues.

"Forced the upgrade?" What does that mean? I upgraded by clicking the Update Manager's upgrade button, and RB 3.0.2 is what was installed by the upgrade.
