I am unable to run Multimedia players. I am using GNOM 2.30.2 distributed by UBUNTU

You are using Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS. (simply Ubuntu 10.04) This is an old version (comparatively). LTS versions are safer versions. Now Ubuntu 12.04 LTS is available (Released in April 2012). Next LTS will be in April 2014 (Ubuntu 14.04).
There might be some problems if some packages are missing in these two media players; especially, when you open videos. You may right click on the Audio or Video file and then you can select your Media Player (i.e., Totem Movie Player or Rhythmbox).
You didn't mention about the actual problem now you are facing.
Dear Suryakanth, I am not an expert. If you ask me, other experts will hesitate to answer this question. I had used Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS. I shall try to give my suggestions. So don't hesitate to mention your problem with these Media Players. [ without mentioning my name frequently :) ]

Well I have recently started using Linux.Since a week or so later thru Update Manager I have come to the present 10.04.4 LTS.
If I go in for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, perhaps I could use Multi media.I'll try & come back to you later.Thanks again.

You can download VLC media player or SMPlayer. VLC will be very useful to you. You can download these in Ubuntu Software Center (which is already installed in Ubuntu 10.04 also). You may Download and install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS or Ubuntu 13.10 (the latest version) from Ubuntu's website. Otherwise you will feel some difficulties later (when Upgrading to a new version--Ubuntu 14.04). If you install Ubuntu 13.10 you will able to Upgrade it in very easily (without saving/copying your files for the new version). Everything will be safe in the new version. You will have to pass more steps when Upgrading from 12.04 to 14.04 because there are 3 versions ( 12.10, 13.04, 13.10 ) in between 12.04 LTS and 14.04 LTS. ( LTS means Long Term Support ). For easy upgrading I suggest 13.10. Then you can continue to use Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. until you familiarize with Ubuntu. ( You will be able to use an LTS version for at least 5 years. )
