A friend sent a burned CD. Why won't Rhythmbox play it?

Asked by Judith Fielsen

A friend sent a burned CD. Rhythmbox shows its title but won't play it. This is the first time I've tried to use Rhythmbox. The friend has Windows XP. The Rhythmbox 'Help' is no help at all. PS. although I have Ubuntu. I am not computer savvy.

Hello Judith,
is this cd a music cd with MP3 file? Do you get any error messages when you attempt to play it? Are you able to browser the CD contents?

You may need to install the Ubuntu restricted extras

Hello Nathan,
a: Sorry I don't know. Friend is no techno either. Friend not currently at home to ask, but will try again later. CD doesn't play on CD player either but didn't really expect it to.
b: no error messages, just 'not playing' under play button.
c: several tries at loading: either get title and artist but no contents OR unknown and list of track numbers but no details.
NB have played ordinary audio CDs successfully on Rhythmbox on previous occasion.
Thanks, Judith
PS in what way 'restricted' please?

Nathan! Just loaded it again to check what happens when and it's playing! Have no idea why now and not before, but not arguing!
Thanks so much for your response, which prompted me to try again.
Cheers,
Judith
