rhythmbox crashes when opening mobile device preferences

so i have been trying unsuccessfully to sync some playlists to my phone but whenever i try to open the device preferences rhythmbox shuts down. i'm using ubuntu 11.10 and the phones i'm trying to use are an iphone 4 with iOS4 and a samsung galaxy sII

when i click on the iphone symbol in rhythmbox terminal displays:

then when i try to open preferences rhythmbox shuts down, terminal says:

(rhythmbox:4213): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_value_set_object: assertion `G_VALUE_HOLDS_OBJECT (value)' failed

this is using an iphone 4 (iOS 4) i then tried the same thing with an android phone, the first line didn't appear when i clicked the device icon but upon trying to use preferences terminal tells me:

(rhythmbox:4360): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_value_set_object: assertion `G_VALUE_HOLDS_OBJECT (value)' failed

this is super frustrating as i can't sync either of my phones now, what can i do?

the play functions are fine on rhythmbox, it only malfunctions when i try to access my mobile devices.

i think i will have to. other apps are ok except banshee which constantly freezes at startup. plus my disc drive won't recognise anything i put in but that might be my [ancient] drive....
