iPod won't talk with my PC

I'm a beginner with Linux, running Intrepid Ibex (8.10) on a laptop. I have some CD tracks on the HDD (MP3 format), where they play happily using Rhythmbox. I want to transfer them to my iPod.
The iPod is my first, a 5th generation nano, and so far has no music on it. It seems to work (e.g. I can listen to radio).
I have been able to move music tracks by Click-dragging them on to the iPod icon that appears on my desktop when I connect it via USB. However, the iPod does not admit to having any music on it: ("No music / you can sync music from iTunes").
I have looked at some answers to others, but so far nothing seems to work.
Help much appreciated.

I have looked at the Wiki. It told me that iPods work fine with Ubuntu (pull the other one!).

Nevertheless, it does have something which looks useful. (It suggests downloading libgpod-dev 0.5.3 and libgpod2 0.5.3. It looks as if these are now superseded by newer versions, and that's what I'd be using, I suppose.)

Unfortunately it dates from 2007, and refers to Hardy and to iPOD NANO 3rd generation. Now, my iPOD claims to be 5th generation NANO, and I'm running Intrepid, and 2 years is a long time in technology. Is there any known reason why the advice might no longer work?

I have tried the solution suggested in the wiki: it involved running the following from the root user # prompt:

/usr/bin/ipod-read-sysinfo-extended/dev/sdf1/media/IPOD

When I do this, I get the response 'not a directory'. I don't know enough to make sense of this, except that the solution is not working.
