how to split the screen under ratpoison

I am experimenting with the window manager ratpoison. After I boot and ratpoison is running, I try to split the screen by entering "C-t s", but nothing happens. Also "C-t : split 2". I get the ratpoison response in the upper right of my screen, so I believe ratpoison to be running.

How do I enter command, including to split the screen?

How do I cause ratpoison to shutdown my computer?
