What's the plan for upgrade to 1.11?

Ubuntu has a new LTS version in about a year. At that time the current version of django (1.8) will no longer be maintained. The next LTS version of django is already released (1.11).

What is the upgrade plan for 1.11? I think it would probably be a good idea to update before 18.04 to be able to stabilize beforehand, but I'm not sure how this usually done in ubuntu.

Or are you waiting for django 2.0 as that will be out before ubuntu 18.04 (although not an LTS version).

Ubuntu is taking over some of its packages from Debian (to avoid double packaging work).
As far as I can see, python-django 1.11 is already in Debian experimental, and stretch and sid have 1.10.

So I assume that at Ubuntu 17.10 will provide python-django 1.10 or higher, and Ubuntu 18.04 as well.

Since Django 1.8 will be EOL in April 2018 how will it be handled on Xenial through 2021?
Do users need to switch to a PPA, or will there be at least a backport? It seems backports have fallen out of favor in recent years.
