How can I run Hardy without PulseAudio?

I am interested in running Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy) without PulseAudio. What packaged should I remove and what configuration files/gconf database entries to I need to change to revert calling on ALSA instead of PulseAudio?

Did you customize your pulseaudio setup ? or it's just the default install ?

I did not change anything. This is for a default installation of Hardy.

Naturally Jad,

I am testing weather or not it is possible to reconfigure Hardy without PulseAudio to see how many applications will react. In my opinion, the implementation of PulseAudio did not take into question many applications that were not written to interface with it. I would like to see what the end user experience would have been should the decision to add PA to Hardy had never happened. I am not against PulseAudio not attempting to fix the implementation as others have reported on ubuntuforums, but instead, just trying to do some testing without it. Which brings me back to my question... would you be able to share an answer on how this is accomplished correctly. I believe (and would like a confirmation) that some packages need to be removed, and some type of configuration change needs to happen. If you can write these up in steps, this would be much appreciated.

Run your terminal and type

sudo apt-get remove ^pulseaudio-

This should remove all applications that starts with pulseaudio- from your installation and all dependent libs.

I don't have a fresh hardy installation to confirm if it's going to remove any other packages but it shouldn't.

Can you help with this problem?
