Why isn't 2.6.x not available for trusty LTS?

Hi,

I see that the only package available for trusty is 2.5.0, why is 2.6.1 not available also?

I was able to build and run it successfully when built from source, but I would really prefer to use a packaged version. As last resort, I could update my box to vivid, but I would also like to avoid side effects due to the dist upgrade.

Packages in Ubuntu releases are usually updated to a new version only in specific cases, e.g. for fixing bugs.

If you think that updating protobuf from 2.5 to 2.6 in trusty provides enough benefit to justify a SRU (see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates ) then please create a bug report stating this.

There are PPAs where people have packaged that new version; you should be able to use one of them if you want.

Thanks for the pointer on the other PPAs. Updating the package in trusty does not justify a SRU, it's mostly a question of using the same version as my team-mates to avoid nasty side effects.
