Ubuntu 10.4 LTS startup

Asked by Peter I.B. Mortensen

Hello

I have just installed Ubuntu 10.4 LTS and it runs smoothly, but i am having some technical problems in the startup, where it is asking if i want to run linux 10.4, Linux 10.4 (reconstruction), if i want to run a previous version of Linux or Windows. when i chose to run Linux 10.4 it's just turning pitch black, and there is a underscore that just blinks like i can write, or it is just turning purple, and then it stays like that, and i dont know if it is frozen or if it's thinking.
how can i get the ubuntu startscreen? is there some patches i can install or do i need to enter the bios to work it out (if i need to, could i get a description of how?)

Hopefully thanks for the help

Ps. do you recomend that i install some antivirus? im new to Ubuntu so i dont know how the threat is on Linux

why install such an ancient release, it has about 9 months support left, after which you will get no updates and no support.

What video chip do you use?

No I can not help you because I got the same machine as you do except the graphic card. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 on this hard drive and now it wont start with itself like your system. I cannot make the machine to start the ubuntu logo with the several dots blinking . If there some genius who can help my machine, I will leave the machine on. I have a copy of the installation disk, but, it wont boot up. It work several hours beautifully, then when I rebooted, it quit running. Please, any technical genius over here who can diagnose my machine, I appreciate.

but it runs smoothly if i run something else first, and then ubuntu... as the memory test til it's about 70% or more and then exits and lets ubuntu startup, and then it runs smoothly even if i restart the computer
but if i turn off the computer then it's the same the next day

Is it the same in Precise, the newer kernel and drivers may help.
