Updated to 10.04 Lucid and wireless not enabled.
Wireless enabled automatically with Ubuntu 9.10 but not enabled in Lucid. There are no networks detected. Works OK with Microsoft so wireless is operative. Laptop is Medion MD 96290.

Here is the update:
1. ensure you have installed package ‘bcmwl-modaliases’ : sudo apt-get install bcmwl-modaliases
2. restart your computer: sudo shutdown -r now
That should work.

Hi,
Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).
In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:
Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications-
Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https:/
Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!
sudo aptitude update; sudo aptitude install hwinfo grep; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/
Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.
Regards,
Mark

There are several indications that your wireless card is disabled by a hardware kill switch or MAYBE by another connected USB device:
The following output indicates this:
1) *-network DISABLED
description: Wireless interface
2) 3: phy3: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: yes
3) rtl8187: wireless switch is off
To fix this, try disconnecting the "Suyin Corp. Acer OrbiCam" USB device.
Only keep the wireless USB adapter connected, then reboot and retest wireless.
It could be that connecting the OrbiCam USB device is causing your wireless card to get disabled... Just an idea...
Your laptop may be experiencing an issue similar to this:

The wireless adapter is internal to the laptop and in Microsoft is connected by a switch above the keypad. In the older version of Ubuntu this switch was inactive but the connection was made automatically.
I am not using a USB wireless adapter.
I'll have a look at the similar issue.

Hi Bob,
I have to disagree.
Your pc has a WIRED ethernet adapter that is internal to the laptop.
This is the wired adapter:
04:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller [10ec:8136] (rev 01)
And this is the only wireLESS USB adapter that you have:
Model: "Realtek RTL8187B_
Hotplug: USB
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0bda:8189 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8187B Wireless 802.11g 54Mbps Network Adapter
It is displayed in Linux as a USB device, not as a PCI (internal) device.
Regards,
Mark

My knowledge of these things is pretty basic and despite reading tutorials etc i can't find out how to disconnect the "Suyin Corp. Acer OrbiCam" USB device. It is physically connected inside the laptop as is the wireless adapter. Can you advise?

Hmmm after doing a little research on the Internet and checking the specs for the Medion MD 96290, you are right. Sorry that I did not believe it at first, because it is very unusual to have a wireless USB adapter that is (internally) built into a PC.
Now I checked the forums of another distribution - sidux - where forumuser pit got it to work out-of-the-box in sidux 2009-03 Preview 1.
Please read the very last remark made by forumuser pit at this location:
I am unsure how to get this fixed in Ubuntu 10.04. Only easy way would be via a kernel update that Ubuntu 10.04 users might receive in the near future. Or else you should revert back to Ubuntu 9.10 while waiting for the regression to get solved.
If you did an upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04 and NOT a clean install, then you should first test wireless from the Ubuntu 10.04 LiveCD session. If wireless works during the LiveCD session, then install from the LiveCD. If wireless does not work during the 10.04 LiveCD session, then it may be a good idea to file a new bug report using this link:
Can you help with this problem?
Provide an answer of your own, or ask Bob Haresceugh for more information if necessary.
