pidgin problems with sending/receiving files

here is my problem:
I'm not able to send/receive files when i'm on pidgin (all my contacts are MSN contacts)
If I ask someone to send me a file, I just do not receive any dialog-window where to accept the transffering (i stress the fact that I get no advice that the file is waiting for me to accept...)

on the other hand, when i try to send a file to one of my contacts they say that they can see the dialog-window but even though they accept the transferring, it stops immediately and automatically....

if it's of any utility i have enabled the "automatic transfer" plugin
moreover i'm sure that in the past i did send and receive file through pidgin at least once. Now it does not work anymore but i have changed nothing in the meantime

can anyone help me?

I'd log a bug. I have this too so I just stopped bothering and set up a file server which my friends have accounts on.

I had this too. Happens on Sametime too. Maybe someone can pitch in a solution.

All I can recommend is close pidgin completely and rename ~/.purple to create a fresh profile to see if it is the same, if its not then its definately the app and you can rename back the ~/.purple folder. Do not delete it as this holds your settings.

If the fresh profile allows file transfers then the old profile is at fault. You then have 2 choices:
1) Build the new profile up with accounts and settings (easy)
2) Rename the old profile back and try to work out what is going on (hard)

i have found out something more
i have realized that the problem of sending/receiving files is not a constant:
it occurs only with those MSN-contacts who have the last version of MSN (the one published in 2009)
while no problem exists with contact with previous versions...
if it is of any help, i've checked that the same happens with emesene (so i think there's something wrong with the last version of MSN...)

finally, i use Pidgin version 2.5.2 on Linux/ubuntu and if i open synaptic it tells me that this is the last version available...but i have read, searching on google, that there exist more recent versions (like 2.5.8),
so why doesn't synaptic tell me this?
and does someone konow if the sending/receiving-problem is solved in these more recent versions?
