sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

you can also add the medibuntu repositories and install libdvdcss2

I wouldnt post your mobile numer on forums, we searching tools search sites for number so you may get a lot of text spam in the future. Just a warning.
The command simply installs a slew of non-free codecs which are not legally allowed to be in the install CD but can be enabled in the repos which means you agree to the terms of the codecs and install them, it also installs java and I think flash.

The medibuntu repo will also allow you to install more codecs which could help.

Incidentally, Did you MD5 check the iSO you downloaded and did you verify the CD once initially booted to?

Btw, many people dual boot with XP, so your note about you buying XP isn't relevant to this thread.

yes Linux crashed and I had to re- install. My updates completed 98% but
errored. I am unable to play DVD`s and CD`s or any .AVI files. I
re-installed linux this morning. I haven`t done the following yet:
* actionparsnip proposed the following answer:
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras*

*you can also add the medibuntu repositories and install libdvdcss
*
yet as I have just completed my re-install. Do you still recomend it?

many many thx

You don't really buy Ubuntu and there is no such thing as an illegal copy as the OS is 100% free. Strange

anyhoo, the MD5 check will allow you to verify the ISO you downloaded is ok. As well as allow you to check the CD you burn / have is ok.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM
will give the hashes
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes
are the hashes

Check your CD passes the self check. If you have a bad CD then any install you do will be bad. Check your ISO that you downloaded and check the CD

Can you help with this problem?
