Message could not be sent because an error with the switchboard occurred:

Every time I type a chat line and hit enter I get the following message:" Message could not be sent because an error with the switchboard occurred:"
And no-one gets my messages?

If you are with MSN,you can connect with HTTP, but will get the switchboard error when sending an IM to a contact. Without HTTP you will get an error from the notification server..

Try this simple workaround-

1. edit your msn account information
2. click on the advanced tab
3. clear use HTTP method
4. make proxy type: no proxy.

note this may not work under corporate network environment though as outgoing connection on port 1836 is not commonly allowed..

For me, this solution does not fix it permanently. In fact sometimes, simply closing the window and reopening it fixes the problem.
