Sound doesnt work

Hi,
In Pidgin, I click tools -> preferences -> sound and then i clicked choose and set it to a sound file i have. Its a very short mp3 file. the test button works, and it is set to make the sound when buddies sign on/off and when i send/receive a message, but it doesn't work. it plays a little beep (not system beep, it seems to be the default sound). Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

ok, im officially an idiot. i didnt realize that i had to set the sound to each sound event! i only had it set to when buddy signed in. the rest was still default.
