Btw....I upgraded to the latest version. Still can't find any preferences for this.

"Alert me when other people add me to their contact list" is an option in the official MSN Messenger client (i.e. Microsoft's proprietary freeware program called "MSN Messenger", for Windows), not in Pidgin.

It seems that Pidgin does not provide corresponding functionality for the MSN Messenger protocol. You could search the upstream* bug tracker for feature requests for this, and if you don't find one, submit one (read http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/TipsForBugReports first).

* "Upstream" means the Pidgin project itself (https://pidgin.im, http://developer.pidgin.im, http://developer.pidgin.im/query), rather than the pidgin package in Ubuntu (https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pidgin, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pidgin). You could submit a feature request as a bug report for pidgin in Ubuntu, but for this sort of thing (and most feature requests, where nothing about the request is in any way specific to Ubuntu), you're likely to have better luck submitting the request upstream instead. If you submitted it on Launchpad for pidgin in Ubuntu, it would just have to get elevated upstream to be considered, anyway.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:pidgin-developers/ppa; sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get -y upgrade

I have 2.7.9 through that PPA, and I still don't have an option for this. (But perhaps it just does it automatically. I'm not very active on MSN, so I wouldn't know. It would be a good idea to upgrade to the PPA and see if that fixes the problem, before submitting a feature request.)

Actually I did the update after I sent the request and it still hasn't fixed the problem.
