Pidgin crashes during inactivity

I'm using Ubuntu 10.10. Pidgin starts up and logs in just fine. Currently I have no plug-ins activated and after a short while (maybe 5 minutes) of inactivity the windows become greyed out and I can't interact with them. Also, the percentage of CPU being used increases from ~10% to about ~60%. I have to force quit Pidgin and restart it. However, if I'm IMing someone actively the program continues to operate without any problems. This began yesterday and I can't discern any changes that I made that might be the reason for this.

add the pidgin ppa and it will give you a later version which may help

I too am suffering this problem even after upgrading to the latest PPA version.

Try:

mv ~/.purple ~/.purple_old

Then rerun the app, you will need to reconfigure the client but it may help

Tried this and unfortunately it continued white screening and going unresponsive. Disabled all the plugins and non standard networks and it's still crashing.

Ok then I recommend you rename the old profile back after deleting the current one

Disabling the MSN network has delayed any crashing so far - 30mins and counting.

Nope just took longer to do it, but since it was random can't tell if it made a change or not. The interfact just goes 100% unresponsive, however I was using the chat window actively, changed window focus for a few seconds and it had crashed in the background.

I've tried these options as well. Same results.
