PcmanFM lost functionality as compared Nautalis?

I have U 11.04 an unsupported system. At that revision a decision was made to make a new file manager the default or replacement for the earlier Nautalis FM. This is PcmanFM. As compared to the former some useful functionality was lost. When you open a subdirectory and navigate to up to the owned dir the dir just visited is not selected. That was a useful feature in Nautalis.

Why was the decision made to use a new file manager when important functionality was lost in doing so?

Also in nautalis one could remove the dir the window was pointed to, selected. That is why if you emptied the dir and wanted to remove it, you have to go up to the containing dir and remember its name because it doesn't remember that it was selected.

The author of the new FM claimed that he wanted to fix problems with Nautalis. Instead he delivered degraded functionality.

Little things do matter.

Were these issues noted a bugs and fixed?

The default file manager is and always has been Nautilus. Even here in Raring it is Nautilus. It's never changed.

Well then, I was going from Gnome 2 on U 10.10 to Unity on U 11.04 and then
choosing Gnome Classic the reason? I open a location and do "about" and I
get PCmanFM 0.09, not Nautilus. Your assertion seems to not be true. Maybe
I'll see what happens if I run nautilis from a terminal.

"nautalus" runs from the shell, but using the places menu from the
applications bar in Gnome Classic gets a different file manager where
"about" says:

PCManFM 0.9.9

The difference is that nautilus gets MIME type bindings that PCManFM does
not get. There is lost functionality there. I guess I am going to run my
file manager from the shell, which the Gnome people didn't intend.

Sorry, actionparsnip, please elaborate. I don.t understand what you are
writing about. What is "it" that is "a dep" on another app? I am now using
nautilus, but directly from the shell via terminal. The "Places" menu still
gives me PCanFM. I consider this problem resolved, EXCEPT someone said that
I can still use the Update Manager to get my system into a supported rev.
by doing things differently, but I do not have details yet. Can I debug the
Update Manager by using the CLI apt-get commands? If so, how can I get the
debian commands to tell me what the Update Manager thinks is wrong with my
current install (U 11.04) that it won't update it?

If you install a program, it may need other packages to run. These packages are dependancies as the program depends on them to work. This is shortened to 'deps'.

If pcmanfm is a dep of another package, then it will have been pulled in to satisfy it. High level packages like lubuntu-desktop and so forth may have pcmanfm as deps.
