Hardware - ram & swap?

If I install more RAM ,Do I need to expand the swap partition? If yes please tell me how do I do that or I have to reinstall ubuntu.
I am using Ubuntu 8.04 desktop edition.

No, the linux-swap partition 'should' be about 2xRam but unless you use "Hibernate" mode a lot then it isn't really necessary, especially above 1Gb of Ram

If you are a very heavy gamer who runs a lot of compiz and watch movies while playing those heavy games then it might still be an issue even above 1Gb of Ram. Otherwise if your Ram is now 2Gb then you probably don't need your linux-swap partition at all anyway :)

You can use a partition editor, preferably either "gparted" for Ubuntu or "Qtparted" in Kubuntu to resize partition space but if *buntu was working before then you are very very unlikely to need to change the size of you swap-partition.

Wow, a good link but i would take the advice at the start of that page and avoid adding more swap space.

If your linux-swap partition is smaller than your Ram size and you really want to use hibernation mode (which really should be avoided) there is still no need to reinstall Ubuntu or anything. It's probably easier to use the Ubuntu Cd as a LiveCd, install Gparted and resize you Ubuntu partition down the tiny bit required and then resize your linux-swap up to the size you want. Messing around with swap-files sounds like getting one step back closer to the nightmare mess Windows makes of this issue and also sounds quite complicated. I would use the LiveCd of a different distro, probably Wolvix, if i really had to do this but as i said there's probably no need.

Please elt us know if you do want to increase your linux-swap partition and want help with that.
