problem to ssh into Ubuntu 10.04 server

Asked by wyverndany

Hi ,

I'm having a problem trying to set up an ssh connection to my home computer using my laptop.
I have installed ssh-server in the home computer and I tested it using
>> ssh localhost
and it works.

Then I try from my laptop to connect using:

>> ssh [username]@xx.xxx.x.xxx

after this it hangs for a while and then it just times out.
I tried to ping the ip address and it doesn't work.
The ip address I'm using is the one that my home workstation displays.

I know this is probably a very basic problem, but I goggled my way through the common solutions and couldn't find anything that actually worked.
I tried specifying the port the server is hearing as found online but still is failing.

I believe it may be a problem with the internet connection to my home computer but I don't know how to verify it.

Hope someone can help me out here.

Thanks very much

Are you connecting over the WWW then you will need to configure port forwarding in your router to allow the data through.

I live on University residences and I don't have any router in my place. I connect directly.
Is there a way to check port forwarding ??

So you are in the University network connecting to your home PC, is that right?

My home is in the same network as my workstation since I live in the university campus.
So i just connect to the web directly with no router of my own.

If they are on the same LAN then you should have zero issue, unless the University guys are blocking all SSH traffic

Ask the admins, or you may be able to quiz the LAN with nmap but not sure

Can you help with this problem?
