Are you thinking of the way Word users in Windows can send emails using word?

Well, Ubuntu isn't Windows and OpenOffice.org isn't Word.

How are you accessing hotmail? Through the web browser, or a program like evolution or thunderbird?

Please be nice this is the real reason linux/ubuntu is founded on. great work Cameron W this is what open source is about. try using wine. go to applications/add/remove select that option select all open source applications from the drop down menu, type in wine. this is a windows installer which allows window apps to run under ubuntu/linux.

If what you want is to sent your documents as e-mails with your Hotmail account simple configure evolution mail to be used with this account and then open your doccument with writer (Applications > Office > OpenOffice.org Word Processor) now click in (file > send [and choice one of the options eg document as e-mail]).

Let me explain in more details.

In Word, in Windows, you can do a Send as Email. This gives you an email dialog. However, this dialog is an Outlook mail dialog (choose Help > About to see this). It lets you choose a signature from the Outlook signature list. If you use OpenOffice.org you can do exactly the same thing. Use Send as Email and the Outlook mail dialog is called and you can choose a signature from the Outlook signature list.

The only difference between Word and OOo in Windows is when you go Tools > Options. Word has an Email Options button which allows you to add signatures to the Outlook signature list. It can do this because Word and Outlook are both Microsoft products. If you want signatures to use from OOo you need to add them in Outlook itself.

In Ubuntu, OOo works much the same as it does in Window. When you do Send.. > Document as Email, it gives you an email dialog, but this time it is the Evolution email Compose dialog. Evolution is the Ubuntu equivalent of Outlook. In the Evolution email dialog, you can choose the signature you want. But just like in Windows, OOo does not have an option to add signatures. To set them up you need to go to Evolution then take Edit > Preferences > Composer Preferences and add them on the Signatures tab.

So, to sum up. Signatures belong to the email application (Evolution or Outlook). OOo has no way of adding signatures to an email application. You need to go to the email application itself to add the signatures. You will then be able to use them when you do Send.. > Document as Email in OpenOffice.org.

Thanks! That taught me a bunch... As it turns out, the sig for hotmail was done in hotmail. Further thought reminded that the sigs I did thru WORD was for the company Email for my outlook company account. I really like the ubuntu program. I still do not have the correct address put in to be able to use evolution, so if someone can walk me thru that, I would appreciate it.

Another issue has surfaced. I noticed when I put in a weblink into my Hotmail emails, it does not high lite, nor does it work to click from the email. I am accessing hotmail from ubuntu/firefox with msn set up as homepage. thoughts/remedies?

Not sure why that would be. I assume you are accessing Hotmail in Firefox browser, so links should work. Perhaps there is some option in Hotmail itself to de-activate links for security reasons.

I am able to make it work with "hyperlink" but it is a one time deal. I have to activate it each time.....

To make a link active in Windows Live Mail to Windows Live Mail all one has to do is when selecting "New" message then make sure in the line where you see "spell check" select "plain text" from the 3 choices of "plain text" , "edit in html" and "rich text" - all email links to any email client will now receive as active. ***Important update**** In Windows Live Mail now when you wish to send an email click on new and when the new message screen comes up and you want to include an active link in the message body wit Rich Text mouse over symbol in Rich Text toolbar that says "send Hyperlink" - put in link required including http:// and click ok and link will be put into message body as Active and will send and recieve to any mail client including Windows Live Mail as Active ! No need to use the Plain Text solution above - full service.
