can not get openoffice writer to open text file in ubuntu

Asked by Phil

openoffice in ubuntu will not open a text file, the file wants to be parsed as a spreadsheet. I dual boot vista and Ubuntu 9.04 and windows works correctly. I could not find any difference in the tool setting between the two.

What is the file extension? What happens when you try to open it? Does it completely fail or just not do what you're expecting it to do? I'm confused by this part of your question, "the file wants to be parsed as a spreadsheet".

The file extension is TXT . When I try to open this in writer it defaults to officecalc.org.calc and brings the file into the spreadsheet text import window and parses the file by those parameters. The fundamental problem is the text file is not brought into office writer as a normal text document document.

Right click on any txt file, go to Properties. Then on that window change to the Open With tab. On there, either select Open Office Word Processor.

I'm not sure if this will work. My other idea is to try to open OO Writer on it's own, then go to File->Open and select your file, then choose "text" as the document type..

Perhaps try opening it with Gedit or some other text editor?
