Automatic line break, splitting decimal and number

Asked by Andrew

My issue is very simple. When I type a number with a decimal, e.g., .0347, OpenOffice separates the "." from the "347" when at the end of a line, and puts the "347" on the next line. How do I keep them together? It works if I enter "0" before the decimal, but this bothers me something awful; no I don't want to enter a leading 0.

You could do a manual linebreak before the dot.
But scientifically correct would be the version with the "0".

The manual linebreak is not the best option, but it will work. This is because, if the document is edited and text is added, then the manual break will mess up the paragraph, and this could be a recurring pain in the *** to deal with.

Hi Andrew

Another alternative is to insert a non-breaking space (Insert > Formatting Mark > Non-breaking space or Ctrl-Shift-Space) before the decimal point instead of a normal space. So if 'e.g., .0347' normally wraps leaving the '.' on the first line, the whole of 'e.g., .0347' goes onto the second line.

Tony,
that is a pretty good option, thought not perfect. It still bothers me that OpenOffice essentially separates a word, and I was hoping to get to the root cause for this. I looked through all of the options and features, and searched much of the manual with no luck.
