Grey shading between words

When converting a .doc to a .odt, grey shading is placed randomly between words. How do I make this go away?

The grey shadings are probably special spaces (eg no-break spaces). To remove them you could select and copy one of them, then, through Search & Replace, search for this space and replace it with either nothing or a ‘normal’ space; use “Replace all” to remove all these spaces in one go.
