In the gnome-panel you can add the "Keyboard Indicator" Applet by clicking right on a panel and then "Add to panel"
In the keyboard preferences there are also a key shortcut to switch your keyboard layout

I need to solve this myself. I need to switch between Spanish and English. I tried to set language preference also, but I do not see the results of my changes. I tried to add a keyboard indicator as mentioned above but did not find it on my menu. Perhaps i am confused as to what the gnome-panel is.
