OO Base is very slow

I am new to Ubuntu. I recently started trying to use Open Office Base, and it responds v-e-r-y slowly. It takes several minutes to open a table that opens more-or-less instantly with OO base in Windows. Running a wordsearch is very slow. Is this a featuer of OO Base, or have I got something wrong?
