how to get openoffice on ubuntu 12.04

Openoffice was replaced a few versions back with Libreoffice. I'm not sure why. I seem to remember that it was something to do with the expected level of future support.

Libreoffice is fully compatible with openoffice so I would use that instead. The file format is identical and the changes in the user interface are so small that you probably will not notice them. Libreoffice is forked from Openoffice which means it started life as Openoffice the vast majority of the code for it is identical.

Libreoffice is installed by default with the standard desktop edition of Ubuntu you should find it in the Dash; but if for some reason you don't have it you will find it in the software centre.

Unless you have a very good reason for installing OpenOffice.org, you should stay with the version of LibreOffice that is supplied with 12.04. That is because:

1) there are customisations made to LibreOffice for Ubuntu which you will not get in any version of OpenOffice.org now

2) the people available to support you here will almost always be running LibreOffice and not OpenOffice.org.

3) if you do have a bug to report, you will not be able to report it here because OpenOffice.org is not supported here.
