Ubuntu 8.10 freeze after login
I installed Ubuntu 8.10 as a dual boot with Vista until I get used to it and the install worked OK although the screen was only diaplying 800x600. The graphics card drivers wouldn't activate and I read somewhere that the kernel may need updating so I ran the Update application. This downloaded about 200mb of files and installed them.
On reboot, the system loads as it did before but now after I log in, the Ubuntu background loads and the drums sound but then nothing else happens. The mouse still moves and I am able to CTRL-ALT-DEL which takes me back to the login screen.
I read it may be a problem with compiz, so I removed those as I can log in on the terminal but this has not solved the problem. Any ideas?
