Setting Bootlevel (shutdown X - problems with NVIDIA)

Asked by Bjarni

Hi everyone.

I have some problems with NVIDIA - as many others it seems. I have GeForce 7300 GT and Ubundu 8.10.
I downloaded the latest drivers from NVIDIA. Upon installing - it complains that X is running and I should close it - or boot with bootlevel 1 (or 2).

This is where I stumble. How do I shutdown X ? And restart it later of course.
How do I select bootlevel 1 ? And revert to normal boot again of course.

Simple questions I guess - but somehow I cannot find an simple answer.

Hope someone can help here.
Best regards,
Bjarni.

Shutting down X sounds like a seriously bad idea!

Are you sure they don't just want you to reboot hte machine? Try rebooting and see if the same error messages appear

Good luck

Hi Tom.
This is the message I get when running the installation pack from NVIDIA (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.22-pkg1.run).

ERROR: You appear to be running an X server; please exit X before
installing. For further details, please see the section INSTALLING
THE NVIDIA DRIVER in the README available on the Linux driver
         download page at www.nvidia.com.

This is the closest thing to the README file I can find: http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/180.22/README/appendix-i.html

Bootlevel is changed in /etc/inittab according to this info. There is no such file on my system (Ubuntu).

I tried to install the latest Nvidia drivers via System->Administration->Hardware drivers earlier - but that resulted in a disfigured screen - including disfigured characters (in login etc...). I recovered from that by selecting recovery mode in the boot menu, selected Try to fix X (or something similar to that) and resumed boot.

I'm trying now to install this package from the manufacturer with the previously explained results.

Best regards,
Bjarni.

Please try to use envy to install nvidia drivers

Open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:
(if the system ask you a password give your user password, you will not see nothing when you type it, then press enter)

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install envyng-qt envyng-gtk envyng-core

Then try to find it into menu Applications → System Tools → EnvyNG

Hope this helps

Hi you all.

Was struggling with this all day yesterday.
Fore the first thing - I found out the way to shutdown X and restart it.

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop (might need to press ctrl-alt-f1 to get command prompt then)
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start

Nvidia isn't working though. I tried envyng. It didn't get me any further althought it's neat to have.
It's down to some library problems. /usr/lib/nvidia/libglx.so.xserver-xorg-core not found. Next I'm gonna look further into a solution from this page: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1034543 Reply #7.

Thanks for your input.
Best Regards,
Bjarni.

Hi Tom.
Yes. I tried EnvyNG and looked all over Alberto's page. It didn't get me any further than I already was by installing the nvidia drivers with Synaptic or the Hardware Drivers section in the System Administration. The screen still came up disfigured and the same coplaint about the lib missing.

Seems to be some problems with this NVidia GeForce 7300 GT card.

Version 180 and 173 of the NVidia drivers give the same results. (EnvyNG still recommends 173 as 180 hasn't been tested). I managed to install the latest drivers (180) I got from NVidia.com but it all turned out the same.

Best regards,
Bjarni.
