running 3.5.0-25-generic kernel instead of 3.2.0 kernel on Lenovo T530 w/ NVS 5400M GPU in Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS in dual screen mode -> nvidia driver not working correctly -> error You are missing the following 32-bit libraries, and Steam may not run: libGL.so.1

Asked by Isope

Lenovo T530 w/ NVS 5400M GPU.
Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
Dual Screen

I am have started using Linux just a few hours ago, and have extremely little knowledge of the terminal.
I have still managed to get the NVIDIA drivers to say they are installed correctly through the terminal installer.
I rebooted.
The Laptop screen has gone to 480 * 600 resolution and the external screen works at the recomended resolution automaticly.
I tried to use Stean for Linux and it says:

" You are missing the following 32-bit libraries, and Steam may not run: libGL.so.1"

i checked the Additional Drivers GUI tab and it does not show anything for any device.
Correct me if I am wrong but this sounds like a driver issue to me.

Please help.

This is normally a bug in some application using the D-Bus library.

Your Terminal output shows these 2 driver related errors:

First:

"[ 17.795] (EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not found)"

Then:

"You are missing the following 32-bit libraries, and Steam may not run: libGL.so.1"

When considering these 2 error messages, I believe it means you need to uninstall and then reinstall the proprietary nvidia drivers.

I think the nvidia drivers were not fully installed. Or some of the nvidia driver files may have been overwritten by a different driver package, somehow....

However, I also saw this output:

Current Operating System: Linux Tpad-t530 3.5.0-25-generic #39~precise1-Ubuntu SMP Tue Feb 26 00:07:14 UTC 2013 x86_64

So you are not using the standard kernel version for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, which is 3.2.0. You are using a kernel from UBuntu 12.10 in Ubuntu 12.04. I think that is causing the problems.

So I believe your graphics card is experiencing the following bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1057675

Solution would be to first install the 3.2.0 Linux kernel (standard precise kernel) and then reinstall the nvidia drivers.

Solution would actually be to

1) first install the 3.2.0 Linux kernel (standard precise kernel)
2) reboot your PC and boot into the 3.2.0 kernel (NOT the 3.5.0 kernel)
3) then reinstall the nvidia drivers
4) then retest

How do I install a 3.2.0 kernel?

Thanks Mark Rijckenberg, that solved my question.
