Why doesn't nvidia-current-updates point to driver version 310 in LTS?

Asked by Dimitri Nüscheler

As far as I know that's no longer a beta driver, so I wonder why nvidia-current-updates still doesn't point to it.

So the final questions is:

Is nvidia-current-updates in 12.04 not pointing to 310, because
1) it never will in 12.04, because 304 is a non-backported driver version and matches the frozen version of 12.04
2) nvidia doesn't declare 310 as stable-enough for LTS systems
3) it is still in testing
4) because 304 is still supported and for >304 version to appear in LTS, version 304 must first come to end of life
5) other
?

Do you suggest to report a bug, because the answer to my question is 5) other: Yes, nvidia-current-updates should point to 310, but due to bug, I should report, it does not?

Or are you saying that this type of question should be reported as a bug?

I'm confused

If the driver is no longer beta (and therefore stable) it may be added to the main repo. LTS is intended to be stable so package updates are quite infrequent compared to the other active releases. If the package is needed (support for newer GPUs etc, bug fixes) then it will be included sooner. Remember, Ubuntu is not a rolling release distribution, so package versions will not be bang up to date

Nvidia's graphics drivers would considered as stable when tested enough by Ubuntu developers.

Ubuntu gives you the option to install 310 if you want , but the name of the package is "nvidia-experimental-310"
Also "nvidia-experimental-304" exists. (slightly newer than nvidia-current-updates).

So when these drivers (nvidia-experimentals) will tested enough to provide stability , will ported to nvidia-current and nvidia-current-updates.

Thanks

Thanks for these answers. In that case I'm happy. I need 310 for "Risen 2: Dark Waters" and "Serious Sam 3"

Risen 2 is not a Linux game, so no reason to update LTS yet
Serious Sam 3 comes with Steam which is still in Beta, so also no reason to update LTS.

I'm very happy that there are strong opinions about the stability of Ubuntu LTS! Keep it that way!
