There are PPAs for later versions of the Nvidia driver.

What video chip are you using?

I know but I'm not really comfortable installing from those.

1050 which was first introduced in 375.20

I can't see it in the proposed repository for Xenial but I'm not really interested in the proposed repository anyway.

Is there any plans to make the package available for Xenial?

All I can suggest is report a bug. You can manually install the driver using the .run file from Nvidia.

You will need to stop LightDM to run the installer.
