installed nvidia update on 14.10 and have no graphic display

Asked by Photon Blizzard

I installed the 14.10 update from 14.04. Somewhere during this process a popup asked if I wanted to install new Nivdia drivers. I clicked yes. It then proceeded to install the updates but never asked for a confirmation password. When I rebooted I no longer have a graphic display. There is a black screen with a rather large mouse. A command shows me that newer 331 and 304 drivers were both installed.

I do have a shell login to work with. I tried adding and removing entries in xorg.conf to no avail. I reinstalled nivdia-current driver and now the mouse on the blank screen is smaller and appears to represent a better graphics mode. WIthout any graphics mode.

The computer still functions as a windows print server, can be pinged from other hosts, etc.

I am using Galaxy card with a 1GB Geforce GT610 Nividia chip.

Any help is appreciated.

Uninstall the driver and reboot, then reinstall it. It is rare for proprietary video drivers to survive release upgrades.

You do realize that Utopic is only supported til July 2015, whereas Trusty is LTS and supported til April 2019.....why upgrade at all?

Can you help with this problem?
