package nvidia-glx-185 not installed failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-removal script returned error exit status 2

Asked by Diego

Actually I am in a process of installing fglrx driver and so I have removed everything related to nvidia, but it seems some parts are still in the system. Fglrx reported as installed but does not load (black screen). When booting through the safe mode the vesa driver gets loaded instead. I am happy to submit further logs etc. on request.

From the log:
Removing nvidia-glx-185 ...
dpkg-divert: rename involves overwriting `/usr/lib/libGL.so.1.2' with

dpkg: error processing nvidia-glx-185 (--remove):

try:

sudo rm /usr/lib/nvidia/libGL.so.1.2.xlibmesa
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get remove nvidia-glx-185

I saw the first reply too late and did this already
dpkg-divert --rename --remove /usr/lib/libGL.so.1.2
this has solved the issue with the diversion and the xorg-driver-fglrx installation could proceed.
However I am getting a different error message when trying to run aticonfig --initial -f:
"Unable to open /etc/ati/control, please reinstall the driver.
aticonfig: No supported adapters detected
"
I am not sure if this fits into this question but this is my ultimate goal - get the fglrx running.
There actually were two ATI HD 5870 running on this machine with Catalyst driver (doing computations) but since some changes I could only start X via safe mode. Now I have removed one of them and would like to get the box in a good shape with Ubuntu driver again.

Karmic is no longer supported in any way. I suggest you upgrade to at least Lucid for support. If you are using a desktop OS then desktop support for Lucid stops at the same time as Natty so I personally advise you clean install Natty rather than upgrade. You will get a more stable OS and you will reach a supported release faster.
