Hello ,

Please close everything (eg: software center , update manager) , all applications and open only a terminal (Ctrl+alt+t keys Combo)

Then apply bellow commands with order. One line at time. Copy=paste them from here in terminal for more accuracy.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
sudo rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/*
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get --purge autoremove
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Write your password carefully , it will not show anything (like not writing , its normal) and
accept with Y(es) and *Enter*(key) the questions.

Thanks

it seems to be python that throws the error. fix above led me into dark territory and kernel panic

Hello ,

fix above (#1st answer) it just removes the lists from apt and re-create them with sudo ; apt-get update ; command

also it purges all unwanted packages , with ; sudo apt-get --purge autoremove ; and eventually update-upgrade all system packages with ; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade ;

It seems odd , above fix to dropped you in kernel panic.

If kernel panic happened , then is difficult to fix that. If you have an other kernel (older) try to boot from there
otherwise I cannot help (with kernel panic) , maybe consider for fresh installation.

Thanks
