Most image files are already compressed. If you are working with a raw image file, converting to .jpg typically achieves a 10:1 compression ratio. Besides converting to .jpg you can also reduce the size/quality of the image. For example a 7.1 megapixel photo from a digital camera can easily be converted to a 800x600 resolution gaining another 10:1 relative reduction in file size.

Gimp is a good tool for changing/editing you photos, Applications-> Graphics-> Gimp Image Editor. You can open an image to edit and go the the menu Image-> Scale Image. Then you can select the size you wish to scale it to. When you save the image you can select the image format you wantl to save it as.

Using an compression archive tool will not reduce the size of your photos but allow you to add multiple photos to a single file archive.

Hope this helps
