Ubuntu Wants My Password, But I Did NOT Create One When I Dual-Installed

Greetings. I recently installed Ubuntu side by side with W7 on my Lenovo laptop. In the past Ubuntu would require that the new user create a new password but this version did NOT do that. When I attempt to add programs or do updates for Ubuntu, the system demands a password I do NOT have. S.O.S. Can you kindly assist me? Thanks. Bernie <email address hidden>
