installation not detecting partions

Asked by kumar

hi, i am trying to install (dual boot) ubuntu 12.04 on my hp laptop. it has got windows 7 on it and its working fine. now while to install ubuntu, the step where one select the partition does not show the existing partitions or os. tried manual selecting the partition, there also its just show a single 500gb unallocated drive. gparted also shows the same.. however nautilus recognise the existing partitions and showing the stuffs on them.. fdisk -l also shows the existing partitions.. thanks..

Which version of ubuntu 12.04 are you trying to install? (32 or 64 bit) Did you check the md5 sum of the iso before burning to disk?

Would it be possible for you to re download the image and put it on a usb stick or cd and attempt to install again? If you can a screen shot of the problem may prove useful

Thanks

I'm having the same problem. When I try to install Ubuntu 12.04, I get a message saying THERE IS NO OPERATING SYSTEM INSTALLED. So I'm back to using Windows, but if anyone can tell me how to fix this I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

you can use fixpart to solve the issue.. you can run it from windows or ubuntu live as well. this problem happens typically because of some error in parttion table. let me know if you face any difficulty there..

Thanks for your prompt response to my post. Where do I find
'fixpart'? It's not in software programs. Is it a command line? If so,
what command? Please advise.

Thank you.

download the deb file from http://sourceforge.net/projects/gptfdisk/files/gptfdisk/0.8.4/fixparts-binaries/
here is a nice tutorial http://www.rodsbooks.com/fixparts/
basically install it and run the command fixparts /dev/sdx where x is the drive.

Can you help with this problem?
