How can I find a file and move it to another disk (Kindle). New to Ubuntu

Asked by dennis fuller

An elderly lady has purchased a laptop with Ubuntu. There are no instructions or help files. She downloaded a Gutenberg book onto her laptop. Now she wants to transfer it to a Kindle reader. and has asked me for help. Windows help files tell me what to do but Ubuntu does not seem to provide help. Where should I look for help in doing what, in Widows, is a simple task? There is an icon on her screen showing the downloaded file so I know its name but not its full address. I have used Windows for over 30 years please do not assume I know anything about Linux systems.
Is there even a book about Ubuntu that she could buy?

How did she download the file? If there is an icon on the screen then she probably downloaded it to the desktop.

Open the file manager. Depending on the version of Ubuntu she has there will either be a menu at the top of the screen or a column of icons down the left hand side. If it's the menu select "Places" then "Home" if its the icons you are looking for the one that looks like a folder.

The full path to the file will be "/home/user/Desktop" replacing user with the lady's user name you can navigate in a similar way to windows explorer.

Now plug the kindle in and open another copy of the file manager. The kindle should appear as another drive click on this and find where the books are stored you can drag the file from one file manager to the other copying the file.

When you have finished close the file file manger that is showing the kindle files then in the other file manger right click on that drive and select "Unmount" or "Safely remove Drive". You can now close the other file manager and unplug the kindle.

Job done.

There are lots of good books on Ubuntu the manual is a free download from here

Or if you want to buy one look here
