Restore file extensions and application association

Asked by Jon Charge

Whenever I open a file in the browser or wherever, it wants to open it with the archive manager. This has occurred since the upgrade. I want to restore this file handling back to normal, but I'm out of ideas. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you for your time.

You can specifically indicate which program opens a specific file extension/type by right-clicking on the file, selecting Properties and under Open With tab, selecting the correct program to use.

I hope this helps.

Is there a way to "fix all the things" at once?

Right click the file and select 'open with' then select the app to open it with. Click to remember the association and click OK

Ok, so to confirm, there is no way (uninstall/reinstall) fo fix all at once?

There is no easy way to do that although you might find I way like this http://www.johannes-eva.net/change-the-default-application-ubuntu-linux to get messy with the file associations. You need to edit the /usr/share/applications/defaults.list (Global) or ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list (user) to be able to correct them. Those files are where the default applications are defined. But be careful, you could do something that can totally mess up your system.

Better to backup the files first.

Can you help with this problem?
