ibus-mozc doesn't work for Japanese

Although the usual Hiragana and Katakana now appear in the top bar, typing in Japanese has no effect: only roman characters appear.
running ibus-mozc two error messages appear:
1. Mozc Fatal Error
Cannot start conversion engine. Please restart your computer.
2. Mozc Settings
Failed to get config values.
Restarting the computer doesn't fix anything either.
