Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs.

No, the source list
System, administration, software sources.
make sure you are connected to the internet.
This is what you need to do to connect to the software sources on the internet to update and install software.
If you do not have an internet connection, you will have to connect to the cd/dvd yo instlled from.
however you do it, this is where in the system you tell your computer where to go

I have the same problem....Update Manager will not open. I get a red target icon that reports that there is a malformed line 54 in source list /etc/apt/source.list. When I view this file it looks normal. Can I delete the "source.list" file and perhaps Update Manager will recreate it?

Thanks for any help.
