meshlab 2016

The actual meshlab package is based on a very old version.
Will the last meshlab 2016 version be packaged for ubuntu LTS 16.04 ?

Updates to existing packages in older Ubuntu releases are done only for specific purposes, e.g. to deal with severe bugs.
New versions of packages usually are only introduced with newer Ubuntu releases.

You might do the following:
Create a bug report requesting to update meshlab to the 2016 version in the upcoming Ubuntu release 17.04
Please note that Ubuntu is taking over software from Debian, and also Debian is still having the old version. So probably filing a bug in the Debian bug tracker first will also be advisable.
When the new version is packaged for Ubuntu 17.04, then a backport to Ubuntu 16.04 could be requested.
