Kernel 3.3 in Ubuntu Precise

You can get 3.3 but its in a 3rd party source. You could report a bug stating the advantages in the 3.3 kernel. It may get included.

Yes, I understand that I can get it from 3rd party. I was mainly inquiring behind the reason it was kept back. I don't really know what new feature or enhancements 3.3 has over 3.2 but considering it's an LTS shouldn't it have the kernel that will possibly still be supported until the next update?

The 3.2 kernel will be fully supported in Ubuntu for your release...

LTS means more focus on stability, so 3.2 fits well. Keep in mind that Ubuntu will probably cherry-pick updates for 3.3 with low regression potential and backport them to the 3.2 kernel. Also, Precise will probably have newer kernels available in the proposed repo (like Lucid has 3.0 kernel available)

At the moment, the desastrous state of 3.1.x and 3.2.x kernels implies that precise should be released with a 3.0 series kernel...

Now that Precise is out and with a 3.2 kernel, does anyone know if it is likely that the 3.3 kernel will come as a normal update to Precise? Or should I go the ppa path?

(There are some modules in 3.3 that are not available in 3.2...)

Ubuntu will not move to a completely different kernel base after a final release. You'll need a PPA, or build your own kernel.

So that leaves me with two options: either run the 3.3 kernel on 12.04 or try to compile/backport the driver to 3.2.
