Installing Ubuntu 9.10 in a HP system

Asked by Shijo

I am trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 on my HP pc, but the CD is not getting up booted at the startup. Thus I am not able to install Ubuntu in to my system. Please solve this problem, I think HP has locked the system and only allows Windows versions to be installed, as it comes with a preinstalled WIndows vista. Please help me to solve this.

You need to check the BIOS to make sure that it will boot from the CD-Rom first, before the Hard Drive

Hi :)

This guide might help
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootFromCD

Then please try the LiveCd demo of Ubuntu just to check how well it performs without tweaks

Good luck and regards from

Hi :)

The LiveCd is better because

1. it doesn't rely on any Windows systems in order to work, leading to point 2 ...
2. it doesn't leave traces behind on the system afterwards, leading to point 3 ...
3. it never requires command-line level knowledge of Windows.

At worst, as in this case, it only requires the user learn how to change the boot-order of the bios. That's a little knowledge that will help them in the future on any machine regardless of whether they choose to continue with Ubuntu.

A proper dual-boot system
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot
is really only a tiny little bit more difficult but again it develops knowledge that can be useful outside of Ubuntu. Again, those 3 points above are valid.

Hi :)

Have you been able to test the new Ubuntu 10.04 before it gets officially released?
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/testing/lucid/beta1
Trying it as a LiveCd or as an extra dual/multi-boot would be ideal. Developers and everyone are keen to try to iron out any problems before 10.04 gets officially released so you might find faster & more effective answers to your bug reports which would make 10.04 work better on your system for you

Thanks and regards from
Tom :)
