How do I compile spl-dkms for linux-image-generic-4.13

This happened during an update:

I have spl-dkms (0.6.5.6-0ubuntu4) installed on xenial. The update pulled in linux-image-4.13.0.32-generic and the compilation of spl-dkms for that kernel failed. I've pasted the output of the compilation below.

To me, this looks like https://github.com/zfsonlinux/spl/issues/618, where it says that 0.6.5.6 won't work for 4.13 kernels.

I've currently downgraded the kernel and put linux-image-generic-hwe-16.04 on hold. What else can I do?

https://github.com/zfsonlinux/spl/issues/618 indicates that 0.6.5.10 should solve the problem.

You could try whether a manual download and install of the packages for artful (0.6.5.11-1ubuntu1 from https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/spl-linux/0.6.5.11-1ubuntu1/+build/13224848) works on xenial.

This this is successful, then a backport could be requested.

the 0.6.5.11 package requires a newer dkms.

Ideally, I'd like a solution with spl and a kernel from xenial repositories so I can continue to get updates.

There is bug #1745045 and the developers will decide whether they act on it.

You are right with the dependency of spl-dkms on a newer version of dkms. If you urgently need spl-dkms (0.6.5.6-0ubuntu4) installed on xenial, then you could try manually install a newer version of dkms and spl-dkms. This would not prevent your system from getting updates.

Other options for a workaround:
Upgrade to Ubuntu artful, or eventually even to bionic
or downgrade to the stock kernel for xenial (4.4.0-*).
